Drawing on Husserl’s philosophical concept of the life-world and the distinction between the “artificial” and the “synthetic,” the exhibition approaches synthetic worlds not as imitations of reality, but as authentic, embodied, and viable modes of existence. In an era in which image technologies, digital environments, video games, and VR/AR applications shape new modes of percep- tion and interaction with the world, the exhibition raises questions about what we consider “real”, “actually lived”, and “authentic”. Synthetic worlds are proposed as fields of freedom, where experience, memory, and identity are reconfigured through hybrid forms, data, and narratives. The works on view present synthetic reality as a dynamic network of computations, sensory stimuli, and cultural constructions, arguing that both digital and so-called “natural” worlds operate through similar processes of synthesis. The distinction between the “real” (focused on authenticity) and the “actual” (focused on present reality over alternatives) becomes a central axis, opening a dialogue on how we experience, remember, and assign meaning within overlapping layers of reality. Through references to technological determinism, social constructivism, and posthumanism, the exhibition examines the dualities of the “synthetic never” and proposes an understanding of synthetic worlds as equally valid actualities: chaotic, calculated, pliable, and constantly shifting. At the same time, it foregrounds issues of othering, embodied memory, and synthetic freedom, suggesting new ways of critiquing social structures and dominant narratives. “Syndromes of the Synthetic Never” functions as an invitation to rethink contemporary experience as a kaleidoscope of synthetic sensations, emotions, and connections that exceed the limits of the physical body and conventional notions of reality. The works present a multilayered visual narrative, where artists attempt to reconstruct environmental and imaginary landscapes, excavating memory through the lens of materiality and temporality. The concept of stratigraphy - borrowed from geology - takes on symbolic significance and is redefined as a tool for artistic research and storytelling. Each engraving, each imprint on the surface, becomes a carrier of a trace, a story, an experience. The artists do not view memory as passive recollection, but as an active, creative field.&nbsp;Their works contain multiple temporal textures, and the probing of traces across complex time scales reveals the tension in our contemporary experience of time: on one hand, the “deep time” of geological epochs; on the other, the intense compression of time in our technologically accelerated daily lives. Within this framework, printmaking operates as a tool of “excavation” and as an anchor of duration—bridging the personal with the collective, memory with forgetting, and sensory experience with conceptual inquiry. Each landscape is thus not treated as a horizontal backdrop from which we extract resources, but as a dynamic co-creator of ruptures formed through the active and reciprocal relationship between the natural and cultural environment. Ultimately, stratigraphy emerges as a multifaceted artistic language and process: a system for decoding the past, but also a tool for identifying hidden narratives that shape the present and suggest transformative possibilities for the future. Panayiotis Andreou creates embossed, ‘sculptural’ monotypes in which he approaches the domestic environment through a process of reappropriating decorative motifs once found on carved furniture - motifs often reminiscent of plant forms or intricate natural interweavings. In his work, these patterns reemerge as carriers of memory and bodily experience. The artist focuses on tactile perception, exploring how the sense of touch involves movement, and how the body - particularly the mind - "feels" surfaces even in the absence of direct contact. Influenced by the thought of Johann Gottfried Herder, who considered touch the most "reflective" of the senses, Andreou transforms these embossed motifs into mental and sensory landscapes through the act of printing. A soft suggestion to privilege sound over silence, reconsidering the meanings of rhythm and vibration.&nbsp; &nbsp; Offering the listener, a sense of movement through space tracing the meditative qualities of sound, without challenging the nature of the innate sounds or audio. Thus, inviting audiences to pay full attention in a flexible listening environment. The project focuses on establishing that listening is far beyond consumptive action, it is rather a gift of intimacy, based on mutual respect, reciprocity and responsibility. In ‘Sonic Entanglements: Phenomenologies of Sound’, objects exist in a state of ambiguity and transformation. Their faint conceptual and sonic echo in the space, has a mysterious aura that is energetic, aggressive and exhausted. &nbsp; The deeper we go into the exhibition space, the stronger the sense of suspension grows. Every artwork unearths new dimensions in a perceptual space where auditory, performative and visual elements interweave and resonate, building a polyphonic sensorium. Participating Artists: Maria Spivak, Androula Kafa, Dimitris Tampakis, Christos Kyriakides and Panayiotis Andreou Panayiotis Andreou’s 7m of love, challenges expectations as the vibrator motors serve as conductors of energy and sound. Panayiotis’ works made of humble materials and common industrial objects, mechanical structures that produce sound, are dynamic and interactive.&nbsp; 7m of love’s vibrations pass through the materials producing subtle yet perceptible sounds and movements. As the two vibration motors seem to be dancing and fighting till death,&nbsp; The sounds and gestures they produce,&nbsp; render audible the passions and desires behind them. His work PERFORMER, the lone work in the space outside, creates a symphony and at times cacophony of sounds that reflect the friction and abrasion between objects. The materials and objects he uses for his sculptures seem to have evolved, as if they have undergone organic mutations. His selection of DC motors, wires and magnets, is both poetic and practical, introducing sound and vibratory elements that add a performative dimension to the sculptures. Various elements of landscape—vegetation, expanses of land, bodies of water, rock and mountain formations—manifest in diverse artistic mediums, serving as conduits for exploration into our relationship with nature and the formation of our identity. Moreover, landscapes not only speak of nature but also bear the imprint of the artists and the cultural and historical contexts in which they were created. In contested territories or geographical areas that have witnessed conflict, war, colonialism, natural disasters, forced migrations or the effects of climatic change, the cultural and historical contexts are especially relevant in the reimagining of landscape. In the exhibits on display, the visitor will encounter environmental sensitivities, fascinations with geology, examinations of how war alters land, symbolic journeys to lost homelands, intercontinental travels, childhood memories, edenic utopias, and mythological places. Each of these unique explorations of landscape unveils portals to both real and alternate realms. Athough it reminds one of a mirror, the material used denies reflection. The sound of vibration, familiar to us through mobile phones, brings to mind moments of connection and communication, whilst the use of bird deterrent tape reminds of all the ways in which distance is created and contact suppressed. The reflective quality of the tape and the mirror-like surface form an uneasy alliance, confronting the viewer with the demand of looking both inward and outward.&nbsp; This wall-mounted sculpture by Andreou is a commentary on the ways in which nature responds to acts of extraction and the current inability of mankind to rehabilitate its relationship to nature and the environment. The title of the work is a quote from dramaturg and poet Mariangela Gualtieri, used to describe her play “Paesaggio con fratello rotto / Landscape with Broken Brother” (2007) in which she illuminates the ways in which the knowledge production embraced by the modern world separates human well-being from that of the enviroment. The open cage created by the artist, along with the collograph print with soil that comes from his home’s backyard, hints at the need to revaluate the tensions produced by dualisms such as nature/culture, human/animal. The magnetic field that holds the magnets together suggests a more holistic way of approaching all life forms. Curatorial Note: The exhibition’s visual narrative takes as its starting point a small work by Hambis, a linocut from 1970, which carries the title “Of Theatre and the Sun”. A black, solid sun at its rightmost corner is the center of a web of concentric circles, which suggest a diffusion of light that is all entangling, strong in its presence, and denoted by black lines. Within this tangle, ten figures without faces -the theatre’s chorus?- are enmeshed in a dance that suggests a pleading to a sun god; a weird exercise in balancing; or a practice of urgency (feel free to make your own connection). What would happen if we thought of this ritual as a plight of bodies thirsty to give the sun a place to rest? Will we stay a bit more with the sensation of a sustained caress, of the flesh that burns ever so lightly in its touch with the world, sometimes even pleasantly so, and asks of the world to sustain this relationship? The exhibition is designed as a spatial essay, where different techniques, images, words and worlds coexist. Emphasis is given to the ways in which the works interact and connect to each other, the surrounding architecture and material substrate of the space. Through the idea of the sustained caress the endless variations of time and touch are foregrounded. We are thus called to reflect on the properties of printmaking to create and reproduce contact zones between surfaces and the world, where the personal, the political, and the poetic interweave.
